Polynices, also called Polyneices, is a Greek mythological character, the son of Oedipus and either Jocasta or Euryganeia. He and his brother Eteocles were left to rule Thebes jointly, but a curse and their failed agreement led to war for the kingdom. The brothers killed each other in battle. Polynices appears in the Theban Cycle and in works including Sophocles' Antigone and Aeschylus' Seven Against Thebes.
