Sarcosine oxidase is an enzyme classified as EC 1.5.3.1. It catalyzes the oxidative demethylation of sarcosine, producing glycine. The enzyme uses flavin adenine dinucleotide as a cofactor and requires oxygen, which is converted to hydrogen peroxide. The sarcosine methyl group is released as formaldehyde. In Corynebacterium, sarcosine oxidase is an inducible heterotetramer produced when sarcosine supplies carbon and energy.
