Rhode Island is a U.S. state in New England, in the northeastern United States. It borders Connecticut, Massachusetts, the Atlantic Ocean, and has a small maritime border with New York. Providence is the capital and largest city. Founded as a haven for religious liberty, the colony was the first to renounce allegiance to the British Crown in 1776. The state is officially known as Rhode Island and is nicknamed the Ocean State.
