The Blue Marble is a photograph of Earth taken on December 7, 1972, by an astronaut aboard Apollo 17 while travelling to the Moon. The original NASA image, AS17-148-22727, shows Earth from the Mediterranean Sea to Antarctica, with the South Pole facing upward. A cropped, rotated and processed version became one of the most reproduced images in history. NASA later used the name for composite global image series released in 2012.
