Hōjicha is a Japanese green tea whose name means "roasted tea". Unlike other Japanese green teas, it is roasted in a porcelain pot over charcoal rather than steamed. Roasting at 150 °C (302 °F) prevents oxidation and produces a light golden colour. Its base generally consists of leaves from the second harvest or later.
