Population exceeding an environment's carrying capacity
Uncommon
Overpopulation, also called overabundance, occurs when a species' population is larger than its environment's carrying capacity. It can result from increased births, lower mortality, reduced predation, or large-scale migration. Overpopulated animals may compete for food, space and resources, then migrate or die without necessary resources. Assessments of overpopulation involve facts and values, including perceived harmful effects on people, ecosystems and other species.
