  • Mountain Ranges

The Blue Ridge Mountains are a physiographic province within the larger Appalachian Highlands range in the eastern United States. They extend 550 miles (885 km) southwest from southern Pennsylvania through eight states to Georgia. Northern and southern physiographic regions divide near the Roanoke River gap. Their distant bluish appearance is associated with isoprene released by trees, which contributes to atmospheric haze. Shenandoah and Great Smoky Mountains national parks lie within the province.
