NGC 604 is a supergiant H II region in the Triangulum Galaxy, discovered by William Herschel on September 11, 1784. It is among the largest H II regions in the Local Group, with a longest diameter of roughly 1,520 light-years. Its gas is ionized by a central cluster containing massive O-type and WR stars. The cluster is less compact than the central cluster of the Tarantula Nebula.
