Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani was Emir of Qatar from 1995 until abdicating in 2013, and also served as prime minister from 1995 to 1996. Educated in Qatar and at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, he held senior military posts before taking power in a bloodless palace coup. His rule saw expansion of liquefied natural gas production, the establishment of the Qatar Investment Authority and Al Jazeera, and major economic, cultural, and social reforms.
