The greater bird-of-paradise (Paradisaea apoda) is a bird-of-paradise in the genus Paradisaea. Carl Linnaeus named it Paradisaea apoda, meaning “legless bird-of-paradise,” after early trade skins reaching Europe had been prepared without wings or feet by indigenous New Guinean people. This contributed to a misconception that the birds remained aloft and did not touch the earth until death.
