Pluto is a dwarf planet in the Kuiper belt beyond Neptune. Made primarily of ice and rock, it is the largest known trans-Neptunian object by volume, though it is less massive than Eris. Discovered by Clyde W. Tombaugh in 1930, it was once considered the ninth planet. The International Astronomical Union redefined planet in 2006 to exclude dwarf planets such as Pluto. Pluto has five known moons, and New Horizons flew by it in 2015.
