A galaxy is a gravity-bound physical system containing stars, planetary systems, stellar remnants, substellar objects, interstellar gas, dust and dark matter. Galaxies range from dwarfs with fewer than a thousand stars to supergiants with one hundred trillion stars. They are classified by visual form, including elliptical, spiral and irregular types. Most galaxies belong to groups, clusters and superclusters, and may occasionally collide during their lifetimes.
