History of the Internet

  • Computing
  • Telecommunications

The Internet grew from efforts to interconnect computer networks, including ARPANET and later packet-switched networks in several countries. Research by scientists and engineers led to the Internet Protocol Suite, especially TCP and IP. NSFNET expanded research and academic access in the United States, while commercial providers emerged in 1989. The World Wide Web, developed at CERN in 1989 and 1990, and expanded fiber-optic capacity helped transform communication, commerce, and technology.

Early network project
ARPANET development contracts were awarded in 1969.
Core protocols
TCP and IP evolved through internetworking research.
World Wide Web
It resulted from CERN research in 1989 and 1990.
