The East India Company was an English, later British, joint-stock company founded in 1600 and dissolved in 1874. Formed for Indian Ocean trade, it later controlled large parts of the Indian subcontinent and Hong Kong. It exercised military and administrative power through its presidency armies and government-like rule. After the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the British Crown took direct control of its territories, and the company was later dissolved.
