The mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), also called the wild duck, is a dabbling duck native across temperate and subtropical parts of the Americas, Eurasia, and North Africa. It lives in wetlands, where it eats water plants and small animals, and commonly gathers in flocks. Drakes have green heads, while females are mainly brown-speckled. The species has also been introduced beyond its native range and is considered invasive in some regions.
