The monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) is a milkweed butterfly in the family Nymphalidae. It is a familiar North American butterfly and an iconic, though not especially effective, pollinator of milkweeds. Its wings have a recognizable black, orange, and white pattern. Eastern North American monarchs make an annual southward migration to Florida and Mexico, while western populations often migrate to southern California. Populations also occur in other parts of the Americas, Europe, Oceania, and Southeast Asia.
