Costa Rica, officially the Republic of Costa Rica, is a country in Central America. Its capital and largest city is San José. Formerly colonized by Spain, it formally declared independence in 1847. After a brief civil war in 1948, it adopted its current constitution in 1949, granting universal suffrage and permanently abolishing the army. Costa Rica is a presidential republic with a stable democracy and a diversified economy that includes finance, pharmaceuticals, and ecotourism.
