  • Prehistoric Mammals

The woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) was an extinct mammoth species and one of the best-studied prehistoric animals, known from frozen carcasses, remains, and cave paintings. Adapted to glacial climates, it had fur, small ears, a short tail, long curved tusks, and specialised molars. It inhabited the mammoth steppe across northern Eurasia and North America, coexisted with early humans, and survived longest in isolated island populations.
