Neuschwanstein Castle is a 19th-century historicist palace in Schwangau, Bavaria, on a rugged Alpine foothill near the Austrian border. Commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria as a private retreat and in honour of Richard Wagner, it was built from 1869 to 1892 in the Neo-Romanesque style. It opened to the public shortly after Ludwig’s death in 1886 and has been part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2025.
