Lucy, also known as AL 288-1 or Dinkʼinesh, is a collection of fossilized bones comprising 40% of the skeleton of a female Australopithecus afarensis. Discovered at Hadar, Ethiopia, in 1974 by paleoanthropologist Donald Johanson, she lived around 3.2 million years ago. Her skeleton combines a small skull with evidence of upright bipedal walking. Lucy became internationally famous and her original fossils returned to Ethiopia in 2013 after a United States tour.
