The giant squid (Architeuthis dux) is a deep-ocean dwelling squid in the family Architeuthidae and an example of abyssal gigantism. Recent estimates place its maximum body size at around 5 m for females, with males slightly shorter; its concealed feeding tentacles can reach 10 m. Although multiple species were once debated, genetic research suggests there is only one. The first images of a living giant squid in its habitat were obtained in 2004.
