Apothecaries' system

  • Units of Measurement

The apothecaries' system was a historical system of mass and volume units used by physicians and apothecaries for medical prescriptions, and sometimes by scientists. Its English form shared the same pound and grain as the troy system. It divided a pound into 12 ounces, an ounce into 8 drachms, and a drachm into 3 scruples of 20 grains. Medical recipes were often written in Latin with special measurement symbols.
