Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) is a fish in the family Gadidae that is widely consumed by humans and commercially called cod or codling. It occurs across parts of the western and eastern Atlantic Ocean, from coastal shorelines to continental-shelf depths. It can live up to 25 years and is brown or green with dorsal spots and a visible lateral stripe. Heavily fished for centuries, several stocks collapsed in the 1990s and many remain at risk.
