USS Lexington (CV-2), nicknamed “Lady Lex”, was a United States Navy aircraft carrier commissioned in 1928. Originally designed as a Lexington-class battlecruiser, she was converted during construction under the Washington Naval Treaty. Assigned to the Pacific Fleet throughout her career, she helped develop carrier tactics before World War II. In May 1942, Japanese aircraft crippled Lexington during the Battle of the Coral Sea. Uncontrolled fires and explosions led to her being scuttled on 8 May.
