The platypus, Ornithorhynchus anatinus, is a semiaquatic egg-laying mammal endemic to eastern Australia, including Tasmania. It is the sole living representative of its family and genus, and one of five living monotreme species. It uses electrolocation to find prey underwater. Males have venom-delivering hind-foot spurs. The species is legally protected where it occurs, but is vulnerable to pollution, bycatching and climate change.
