The Battle of Makassar Strait, also called the Action of Madura Strait, was a naval battle in the Pacific theater of World War II. On 4 February 1942, an American-British-Dutch-Australian fleet under Rear Admiral Karel Doorman was seeking to intercept a Japanese invasion convoy believed to be bound for Surabaya. It was attacked by 36 Mitsubishi G4M1 and 24 Mitsubishi G3M2 medium bombers, forcing the fleet to retreat.
