The Enforcement Act of 1871, commonly called the Ku Klux Klan Act, was a United States Act of Congress intended to combat Ku Klux Klan paramilitary vigilantism. Signed by President Ulysses S. Grant on April 20, 1871, it made certain private conspiracies to deprive citizens of rights federal offenses. It also authorized the president to deploy federal troops and suspend habeas corpus. Parts of the law remain codified, including a civil rights enforcement statute now known as 42 U.S.C. § 1983.
