Newton is a monotype by the English poet, painter and printmaker William Blake. First completed in 1795, it was reworked and reprinted in 1805 as one of his 12 Large Colour Prints. It depicts Isaac Newton naked and crouched on an algae-covered rocky outcropping, apparently on the sea floor, drawing diagrams with a compass on a scroll. The work reflects Blake's opposition to Enlightenment science and materialism.
