The Stanford prison experiment was a psychological experiment conducted at Stanford University in August 1971. Led by psychology professor Philip Zimbardo, it simulated a prison environment to examine situational effects on behavior. Twenty-four male college students were assigned as prisoners or guards. Psychological abuse by guards worsened over five days, and Zimbardo ended the planned two-week study on its sixth day. It has been criticized as unethical, difficult to reproduce, unscientific and fraudulent.
