Rare
Tridacna gigas, commonly called the giant clam, is the best-known species in the genus Tridacna and the largest living bivalve mollusc. It inhabits shallow coral reefs across the Indo-Pacific, including areas near the Philippines, Malaysia, and the South China Sea. Adults are sessile and obtain most nutrition through symbiotic zooxanthellae living in their mantle tissues. Populations are declining, and the species has disappeared from many former habitats.
