The high-affinity choline transporter, also called solute carrier family 5 member 7, is a human protein encoded by the SLC5A7 gene. It is a cell membrane transporter that carries choline into neurons that synthesize acetylcholine. Hemicholinium-3 inhibits the transporter and can deplete acetylcholine stores. Coluracetam enhances it and can increase cholinergic neurotransmission by enhancing acetylcholine synthesis.
