George Washington was a Founding Father who commanded the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War and served as the first president of the United States from 1789 to 1797. Born in the Colony of Virginia, he also presided over the Constitutional Convention in 1787. His presidency established enduring precedents, including a peaceful transfer of power and the two-term tradition. A tobacco and wheat planter at Mount Vernon, he owned many slaves and later provided for their eventual manumission in his will.
