Zika virus (ZIKV) is an arbovirus in the family Flaviviridae, spread by daytime-active Aedes mosquitoes, including A. aegypti and A. albopictus. First isolated in Uganda's Ziika Forest in 1947, it spread from Oceania across the Pacific to the Americas between 2007 and 2016. Infection is often mild or symptom-free, but infection during pregnancy can cause serious birth defects. Adult infections rarely cause Guillain–Barré syndrome.
