Major William Gosling VC was an English soldier and farmer. He received the Victoria Cross for an action near Arras on 5 April 1917, when he removed and threw aside the fuze of a mortar bomb that had fallen close to his detachment and then exploded. After the First World War he farmed in Wroughton, served as a parish councillor and Royal British Legion vice-president, and later served in the Home Guard during World War II.
