Stonehenge is a prehistoric megalithic structure on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England. Built in several phases from about 3100 BC to about 1600 BC, it has an outer ring of sarsen stones, smaller bluestones and free-standing trilithons. The ruined monument is aligned with the summer-solstice sunrise and winter-solstice sunset. It stands within a dense complex of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments and may have served as a burial ground from its earliest phase.
