Tanghulu, also called tang hulu or bingtang hulu, is a traditional Chinese snack of fruits coated in malt sugar on a bamboo skewer. It is usually made with Chinese hawthorn, whose fruits are skewered and dipped in heated sugar syrup that hardens in the cold. Made since the Song dynasty, it remains popular in northern China. Modern versions use fruits including strawberries, mandarin oranges, kiwifruit and bananas.
