Phocis was an ancient region of central Greece that included Delphi. It was the country of the Phocians, one of several small mountain states in Central Greece. The Phocians spoke a Northwest Doric dialect, a version of Doric Greek. A modern administrative unit called Phocis is named after the ancient region, but is substantially larger. The region is also associated with the Dorians' crossing of the Gulf of Corinth at the beginning of the Greek Iron Age.
