Madagascar, officially the Republic of Madagascar, is an island country in the Indian Ocean, off the southeastern coast of Africa. It includes the island of Madagascar and smaller peripheral islands. Its capital and largest city is Antananarivo. Long geographic isolation contributed to high endemism among its wildlife. Malagasy and French are official languages, and the country is a member of the United Nations, African Union, SADC, and Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie.
