Hamlet, formally titled The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare sometime between 1599 and 1601. Shakespeare's longest play is set in Denmark and follows Prince Hamlet's efforts to avenge his father’s murder. His uncle Claudius killed Hamlet's father, took the throne, and married Hamlet's mother. Three early versions, the First Quarto, Second Quarto, and First Folio, survive.
