A doodlebug, also called a hoodlebug or jitney, is a United States nickname for a self-propelled railcar usually arranged to carry passengers and freight. Early examples commonly used gasoline engines with mechanical or gas-electric drive systems, while many were later fitted with diesel engines. Railroads used them, usually singly, for passenger and mail service on lightly used branch lines, where they cost less to operate than locomotive-hauled trains with coaches and larger crews.
