Akira Kurosawa was a Japanese filmmaker whose career spanned six decades and included 30 feature films. He worked as a director, writer, producer, and editor. After entering the Japanese film industry in 1936, he made his directorial debut with Sanshiro Sugata in 1943. Rashomon won the Golden Lion at the 1951 Venice Film Festival and helped bring Japanese films to Western markets. His films include Ikiru, Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, Kagemusha, and Ran.
