Charlottesville, also called C'ville, is an independent city in Virginia, United States, and the county seat of surrounding Albemarle County, though they are separate legal entities. Named after Queen Charlotte, it was formerly Virginia's capital. Its 2020 population was 46,553. Charlottesville was home to U.S. presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe, and the University of Virginia lies along its southwestern border.
