John Joseph Pershing, nicknamed “Black Jack”, was an American army general, educator, and founder of the Pershing Rifles. He commanded the American Expeditionary Forces from 1917 to 1920 during World War I, insisting that it operate as a single unit under his command. He was the only American promoted during his lifetime to General of the Armies, the highest possible United States Army rank.
