The Aztec Empire, also called the Triple Alliance, was an alliance of the Nahua city-states of Mexico-Tenochtitlan, Tetzcoco, and Tlacopan. Formed after a civil war, it expanded through conquest and was increasingly dominated by its capital, Tenochtitlan. Its rule was generally indirect, with conquered cities retaining local rulers while providing tribute and military support. The alliance was defeated in 1521 by Spanish conquistadores and their native allies under Hernán Cortés.
