The First Crusade was a religious war initiated, supported and sometimes directed by the Latin Church. After Pope Urban II urged Christians to undertake an armed pilgrimage to Jerusalem in 1095, forces from western Europe travelled through Anatolia and captured Nicaea, Antioch and Jerusalem. The capture of Jerusalem in July 1099 involved the massacre of many residents. The campaign ended after the Battle of Ascalon, and four Crusader states were established in the Holy Land.
