The Battle of the Somme, also called the Somme offensive, was a First World War battle between the British Empire and French Republic and the German Empire. Fought in France from 1 July to 18 November 1916, it was intended to hasten an Allied victory. More than three million men fought, with more than one million wounded or killed. British and French forces gained territory but did not achieve their operational objectives.
