Derivative

  • Calculus and Analysis

In mathematics, the derivative quantifies the sensitivity of a function's output to changes in its input. For a single-variable function, when it exists at a chosen value, it is the slope of the tangent line and gives the best linear approximation near that value. Derivatives are often described as instantaneous rates of change. Finding a derivative is called differentiation, and derivatives can also be generalized to functions of several real variables.
