The halloween genes are a set of genes in Drosophila melanogaster that affect embryonic development. They encode cytochrome P450 enzymes in the ecdysteroidogenic pathway, which produces ecdysone from dietary cholesterol. The name was coined for embryonic lethal mutations associated with defective exoskeleton formation. Mutant embryos develop abnormal features during mid-embryogenesis and die before embryogenesis is complete.
