It occupies much of the northern and eastern coastlines of Port Phillip Bay. The area has been home to Aboriginal Victorians for over 40,000 years, and Melbourne was founded by free settlers in 1835. It served as Australia’s interim seat of government after federation until Canberra became the permanent capital in 1927.
