Fortified Sector of Maubeuge

  • World War II

The Fortified Sector of Maubeuge was the French military organization controlling about 70 kilometres of the Maginot Line between the Belgian border and Maubeuge in 1940. It was a comparatively lightly defended sector, with many blockhouses and casemates and four major ouvrages. During the Battle of France, its larger fortifications resisted German bombardments and infantry attacks, but the line was outflanked and attacked from the rear. Positions surrendered or were evacuated after being surrounded.
